False-colored microdroplets of water are condensing on additively manufactured nanocellular structures generated from the preferential removal of the Al phase by the reduction‒oxidation reaction. Microdroplets exhibit extremely low liquid‒surface adhesion even at high supersaturation, enabling spontaneous droplet detachment upon coalescence.

Bimetallic Pd‒Ag alloy nanoparticles exhibit satisfactory sensing enhancements during H2 sensor applications. In situ TEM is now used to investigate the failure mechanisms of Pd‒Ag nanoparticles under operation conditions. Forging an artificial protein cage: Multiple copies of a ring-shaped protein assemble into an artificial, nanosized hollow cage when mixed with gold nanoparticles. The resulting cage has a 3D lattice of regularly arranged gold nanoparticles embedded in its structure.

Monolayer borophene is metallic and has a lattice structure that depends on the substrate. An extensive structural search based on first-principles calculations shows that bilayer borophene on Ag(111) shares the same ground state as its freestanding counterpart. The bilayer structure contains interlayer bonds that not only localize electronic states to open a bandgap enabling logic operation, but also decouple the whole bilayer from the substrate to some extent, resulting in a quasi-freestanding system.
